Old Bailey Private Tour

The first social event of Master Lesley Wilson's year took place last week. 23 Marketors were treated to a private tour of the Old Bailey. We were very honoured to have as our host, Sherriff Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli who proved to be a very  knowledgeable and entertaining guide.  The tour included  the world-renowned Court Number One (scene of such trials as Crippen, Yorkshire Ripper and Ruth Ellis amongst many others), the marbled splendour of the Grand Hall and the Judges’ Dining Room. We were also able to see the cells below the courts, which had been cleared for the day. Afterwards we retired to the Viaduct Tavern, built in 1869 on the site of the old Newgate Gaol, to enjoy for food, drinks and fellowship.
