Member Event
The 2025 Sheep Drive takes place on Sunday 28th September over Southwark Bridge between 10:00 and 15:00. This event is organised by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen who provide the sheep and ensure their welfare. It is a historical event full of pageantry and colour.
Background
In medieval times, a toll was charged when sheep were driven across the bridge to sell in the city markets. Those with Freedom of the City of London were exempt from the toll. With the introduction of transport, the practice disappeared until the Worshipful Company of Woolmen re-introduced the event. The sheep drive features in the media and along with the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London, there is often a celebrity. Last year Damien Lewis, and previously Dame Mary Berry and Shaun the Sheep have taken part.
If you have gained your Freedom of the City of London before March 2025, you are entitled to exercise your right to drive sheep across the bridge.
This is a fun event and you can join other Marketors. The drives are organised in blocks of 10. The Woolmen allocate a ‘drive time’ and after the event you are given your certificate of participation.
