The Marketing Leader Series

Past Master John Farrell was Master in 2021/22. The theme for his year was Marketing - leading from the front. This reflected his belief that the discipline of marketing has never been more fundamental to business success. And that people with marketing backgrounds and training are brilliantly placed to lead the reinvention of businesses for the new world we are living in.

To support his theme he introduced a series of interviews called "The Marketing Leader Series", which allowed the Company to hear from five of the most admired marketing and business leaders in the world about what has made them, and their business so successful.


Marketing Leader Series Event One: Past Master John Farrell In Conversation with Sir Martin Sorrell

On 11th February 2021 Sir Martin Sorrell was officially admitted as an Honorary Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Marketors. This is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the marketing services industry throughout his distinguished career. On the same evening Sir Martin was the first of the new Master's Marketing Leader Series of Interviews in 2021.


Marketing Leader Series Event Two: Past Master John Farrell In Conversation with Alan Jope

On 20th April 2021 the Master of the Worshipful Company of Marketors John Farrell interviewed Alan Jope - CEO, Unilever. The Master talked with Alan about his career journey since joining Unilever UK in 1985 and what he has learnt and observed from working in North America and Asia - where Alan doubled the size of Unilever’s China business. With over 2.5 billion people globally using Unilever products each day, Alan shared his passion to lead from the front on sustainability and how COVID-19 has impacted the global Unilever workforce of nearly 150,000 people. In addition, we found out how Alan sees Unilever’s future in terms of online vs offline sales and marketing.


Marketing Leader Series Event Three: Past Master John Farrell In Conversation with Baroness (Martha) Lane Fox

The Master John Farrell talked with Baroness Lane-Fox about her extraordinary journey pioneering Digital and Internet development in the UK from Co-Founder of LastMinute.com to taking on the role of Digital Champion for the UK Government with the launch of GOV.UK.

As the youngest female crossbencher in the House of Lords to Chancellor of the Open University, Baroness Lane-Fox is recognised as the most influential woman in Digital in the last 25 years.


Marketing Leader Series Event Four: Past Master John Farrell In Conversation with Eric Nicoli

The Master John Farrell talked with Eric Nicoli CBE about his extraordinary branding journey through multinational consumer facing companies for over 45 years. This talk provided a fascinating insight into Eric's career in brand marketing from bringing the Yorkie bar into the world to bringing innovation to all his consumer facing roles.


Marketing Leader Series Event Five: Past Master John Farrell In Conversation with Steve King

For the final event in the Marketing Leader series Past Master John Farrell interviewed Steve King, Chief Operating Officer, Publicis Groupe Worldwide. As COO, Steve is responsible for leading Publicis Groupe’s global Media, Commerce, Content and Production teams and developing the Company’s marketing transformation practices across all the Group’s operations and countries.

They discussed Steve’s view of the changing media landscape, the growth of digital, working in the US for a French company, the challenges of being a global leader and much more.
