Holding an annual church service is something that most Livery Companies do. Ours has the theme of ‘Hope’ and reminds us to rededicate ourselves to our core values in our daily lives. Archdeacon David Meara has the happy skill of making his words appeal to everyone, regardless of faith; you are all most warmly invited to attend.

After the service, why not join us for ‘Beating the Bounds’? This Rogation-tide ceremony dates from the 8th century when ‘Gangs’ of villangers would walk parish boundaries asking for God’s blessing on the crops whilst bashing landmarks with will sticks. Why? So that there were fewer boundary disputes, as everyone knew just where the parish ended.
Today we use garden canes for this unusual beating – cursing the neighbouring parishes as we go - ‘Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour’s landmark!’ Traditionally, Gangs were rewarded with cakes for their efforts. Our reward will be supper with wine in Bridewell Hall, an elegant high-ceilinged room with splendid paintings, just behind St Bride’s.
Supper buffet includes: Hot Lasagne or similar (vegetarian option) with six salads, fruit and cake platter, half a bottle of wine/ soft drink per person, mints.
