Title Behind the Scenes at the Royal Geographic Society
Date 20 October 2009
Venue Royal Geographic Society, 1 Kensington Gore SW7
Introduction
180 Years of Understanding our World. Founded in 1830, The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is a world centre for geography; supporting research, education, expeditions and fieldwork, and promoting public engagement and informed enjoyment of our world. It is the largest and most active scholarly geographical society in the world; and it has just welcomed its new president, the well known traveller, broadcaster and ex Python, Michael Palin.
Description

The evening starts at 6.30pm with a welcoming glass of wine, an introduction to the Society by Director Dr Rita Gardner CBE, and an overview of the Society’s current activities including plans to create an exciting new Street Gallery exhibition based on 100 aerial photographs of the UK – Britain from the Air – that will be designed to illustrate the diverse and fabulous country we all live in and engage with the public as it tours the country to stimulate, educate and inspire a greater sense of national pride.

We will tour the historic building at 1 Kensington Gore and view a selection of the Society’s rich Collections with a private preview of iconic items reflecting the history of travel and exploration including unique artefacts relating to the ‘Heroic Age’ of Antarctic exploration, such as Shackleton’s Burberry helmet, and a range of items relating to the African expeditions of Livingstone and Stanley, plus highlights from the Society’s collection of over 1 million maps – the world’s largest private map collection.

The evening will finish off at about 8.30pm with drinks and canapés in the main hall.
