Launch of Think Tank to raise profile of marketing
Promoting marketing excellence is a key aim of the City livery company for marketing and in a presentation to the media David Hanger, publisher of The Economist and Master of the Marketors, yesterday (25.11.04) launched a Think Tank composed of marketing practitioners to enable the Marketors to add practical input and advice on marketing.
In outlining the scope of the new initiative, David Hanger - who will be the Think Tank’s first chairman - said ‘It will cover many aspects of industry and marketing. It will have opinions on current marketing practice and trends, produce bench mark studies, act as a balanced cross-section panel, have opinions about UK and European government initiatives where appropriate, raise the profile of marketing within “the City” and work to raise the standard and role of marketing within the corporate environment.’ (Its recently published booklet “This business is OK today but how well will it do in the future?” which was mailed to over 6,000 company directors plus analysts and now being reprinted is one such example.)
‘The Think Tank will be made up of marketing experts from a wide range of industries including finance, IT, agency, drinks, retail, consulting, marketing academics. Counting amongst their numbers are notable Marketors from IBM, Cap Gemini, Britvic and PwC.’
The group will also be working with other industry bodies following the launch of the new OFR (Operating and Financial Review) and through communication with the Accounting Standards Board expects to issue guidelines for the large- and medium-sized companies that will have to adopt this new initiative during the April 05-06 financial year.
In outlining the variety of activities of the company, David Hanger mentioned the Marketors Charitable & Educational Trust, through which the livery seeks to promote excellence in marketing by presenting annually over 40 awards for Excellence in Marketing dissertations and exams to UK colleges and professional bodies including the Institute of Direct Marketing, Cranfield, Cass Business School, Henley, London Business School and the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Also in the Marketors “Outreach” programme, individual Marketors provide marketing advice on a voluntary basis to assist start-up and small businesses in the East End boroughs adjoining the City. The Marketors are focused on raising the profile and value of marketing.
