The Activities of the Marketors' Company

The Company adopts a dual strategy in its mission to recognise and encourage marketing excellence. Excellence in Practice is recognised by inviting acknowledged marketing leaders to address our events. The other strand of the strategy is the Encouragement of Excellence in education, teaching and learning.
Excellence in marketing practice
In particular the Marketors' Company invites marketing leaders to give the annual WCM City Lecture and the annual Bowden Address. Recent speakers have included Lord Bell, Lord Young, Sir Stanley Kalms, Sir Michael Perry, Sir Brian Pitman, Sir Mark Weinberg, Sir Martin Sorrell and Phillip Watts, Chairman of the Managing Directors' Committee of Shell who gave the Lecture held at the Guildhall in September 2002.

Encouragement of marketing education
The company currently presents over 50 WCM Awards annually for the best performance by students in examinations run by a range of professional bodies and academic institutions. It also offers a research bursary in memory of Lord Mais a former Lord Mayor and Master of the Company. The awards cover over 30 leading universities and business schools, and also CAM (the Communications, Advertising and Marketing Education Foundation) as well as the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Better understanding of marketing
To encourage a better understanding of marketing among those not pursuing a career in the field, the Company also presents awards for the best performance in the specialist marketing papers of the professional qualifications in Banking, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Insurance, Market Research, and the Meat Industry.

The Company has also founded a Chair in Marketing at the London Business School.
These activities and awards are mainly funded by the WCM Charitable and Educational Trust which also offers help to those in need. All Liverymen are expected to contribute to this trust, preferably through a covenant.

Fellowship and networking
The company provides a social agenda to enable Liverymen to meet, socialise and network with like-minded people with a common interest in marketing. The Company holds five formal functions during the year, including two dinners and two lunches at one of which the Company entertains the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs at the Mansion House.

The annual Church Service of Rededication at St Bride's is held in May. During the year there are a variety of other more informal functions which Freemen and Liverymen are encouraged to attend usually with their wives or husbands and other guests.

It is often at these events and during overseas visits that members of the Company make lasting friendships. The Marketors are a lively and hospitable group.
