Our Mission and Aims
The Marketors is the 90th in the City of London Roll of Livery Companies, which now number well over 100. More than 30 'Modern' Livery Companies have been created since 1926, reflecting the evolution of new professions all with a significant role to play in the conduct of modern-day business within the City of London. These newer companies are more able than the older livery companies to draw their membership from within the profession they represent.
We are delighted that the Worshipful Company of Marketors application for a Royal Charter was approved at a meeting of the Privy Council held in Windsor on 12 April 2010.
There is a close relationship on a personal and professional level between the Worshipful Company of Marketors, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and other marketing organisations, which are all entirely independent.
The Company’s Mission is:
"To be the City Livery Company for leaders in Marketing"
The Company fulfils this Mission through its five Aims:
1. To promote marketing as a force for economic and public benefit
-
By providing the platform and opportunity for leading members of the profession to persuade the UK's opinion formers of the benefits of marketing excellence.
-
By fostering an understanding of the role and benefits of marketing with institutions and their clients, primarily within the City.
2. To encourage excellence in marketing education and practice
-
By inviting those Freemen who have demonstrated a successful career in marketing and commitment to the Company, to join the Livery.
-
By granting Awards and research Bursaries to students of marketing and to organisations that have excelled.
-
By encouraging original marketing research and providing a platform for lectures, discussion and publishing.
3. To support the City of London and the Mayoralty
-
By seeking involvement in projects related to the City, which require marketing expertise, and by providing advice to the Corporation, if required, on a pro bono basis.
-
By encouraging Liverymen to attend Common Hall and to participate in the governance of the City including standing for office.
4. To raise funds for and be involved in charitable work
-
By all members contributing to the Charitable and Educational Trust.
-
By involvement in charitable projects, which employ the skills of members
-
By periodically holding major fund raising events, which will make a significant contribution to a Marketors' or City's charitable cause.
5. To foster fellowship and discussion among members
-
By providing a balanced programme of exceptional professional occasions, with top level speakers on marketing or City topics, interesting business or City focused events and unusual or privileged social gatherings

Application for a Royal Charter
The Worshipful Company of Marketors application for a Royal Charter has been successful. At the meeting of the Privy Council held in Windsor on 12 April 2010, Her Majesty the Queen approved an Order ordering the Lord Chancellor to apply the Great Seal to the Charter of the Worshipful Company of Marketors.
The Marketors was constituted as a Livery Company of the City of London on 14 April 1978, on being granted Letters Patent under the Mayoralty Seal following the approval and acceptance of our Constitution and Ordinances by the Court of Aldermen of the City of London. As such the Company was not incorporated (for example as a limited liability company or a company limited by guarantee) which meant that members had no protection against any liabilities in the unlikely event of the Company being wound up. Incorporation by Royal Charter provides freedom from all potential liability. The Charter sets out what is expected of the Marketors in a new document which becomes the overarching framework for managing and operating the Company.
The grant of a Royal Charter by the Privy Council is also formal recognition of our Company’s achievements. For example in the areas of supporting and recognising excellence in marketing education, through our awards programme, our outreach activities, through the promotion of marketing in the boardroom, through thought–leadership in marketing and finance topics, through the Marketors' Think Tank and the many other areas of livery activities included on this website.
The granting of the charter is the culmination of three years of effort. The Company received many letters of support from professional marketing associations, other livery companies and other organisations in support of our charter application (these are known technically as “non-objectors”). We are extremely grateful to these organisations for supporting our application and also to the Aldermen of the City of London for supporting our petition for a Royal Charter. Notice of our petition appeared in the London Gazette in February 2010 and we received no objections to the petition. We are now progressing through the stages of having the charter formally printed and a special hand-written document is also being prepared to which the Great Seal will be affixed.
The Marketors is planning a major event to celebrate the granting of the Royal Charter to be held on 19 October 2010 at the Guildhall in the City of London.
